Putnam applies for grant to install electric charging stations

By Francesca Kefalas
For The Bulletin

PUTNAM — Town leaders are hoping a $10,000 grant will help the town move along a greener path.

Town Administrator Douglas Cutler said the town has applied for a grant from Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to install two electric charging stations in the municipal parking lot on Kennedy Drive and Pomfret Street. The stations would be along the Canal Street side of the parking lot, Cutler said.

“There are more and more electric vehicles on the road and we think this would be an asset,” Cutler said.

Public works director Jerry Beausoleil said there is service to the parking lot in the area and installing the stations can be completely covered by the $10,000 grant.

“We wanted the stations to be in a prime location and that is the best place every way you look at it,” Beausoleil said.

While the town is waiting to hear about the grant, it has also entered negotiations with Green Power Solutions to provide electricity to Putnam from an anaerobic digestion plant to be located at Fairvue Farms in Woodstock. The town has also signed an agreement with attorney Paul Michaud at Murtha Cullina to investigate the possibility of creating a solar farm at the old town transfer station.  Read more.
