The South Central Regional Water Authority in Hamden has broken ground on a 4,000-panel, 1-megawatt solar system.
At 1 megawatt, the solar system will be among the top five largest solar arrays in Connecticut once complete. The electricity generated is enough to power 120 Connecticut homes.
California-based SolarCity, with offices in Rocky Hill, will install, finance, and maintain the panels. SolarCity will sell the power to the water authority at lower than the cost of utility electricity.
The Hamden water authority system will be ground-mounted, as opposed to most smaller system that typically dot rooftops. When complete, the 1 megawatt system will be smaller than only a handful of planned projects: a 20 megawatt system in Sprague and Lisbon and two 5 megawatt systems in East Lyme and Somers.
